JAMES: FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD
 
Another important personality in church history is James, the brother of John and son of Zebedee, who wrote one of the earliest epistles to believers scattered by persecution during Saul’s time. As these scattered Christians gathered in new places, problems arose: some claimed to have faith, yet their lives did not reflect it. Is oral confession enough? Can true belief in Jesus exist without a change in heart, mind, and character?
 
History shows that many professed Christ with words, but lacked transformation. They could eloquently describe their conversion, testify with passion, and even preach deep doctrines of Scripture. Yet without a life changed by God’s Word, such claims are empty, like “a tinkling cymbal” (1 Cor 13:1), that makes noise but is not pleasing to God.
 
Brethren, genuine faith in the Lord Jesus Christ always brings about transformation. Repentance frees us from sin and Satan’s dominion. A new hunger and thirst for God’s Word arises. A yearning to see others saved grows within us. A desire to live by the Spirit through the Word takes root. Our lives begin to shine as lights in this dark world, drawing others to Christ.
 
Faith must be more than words; it must be lived out in deeds. Verbal claims of salvation without evidence of change should cause us to examine ourselves. To deceive our own hearts is a fearful thing. True assurance comes when the Holy Spirit indwells us, testifying that we have been justified by Christ. Then we know our faith is alive. “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” (James 2:17-20).
 
THOUGHT: Do I have the Holy Spirit dwelling within me, confirming that my faith is living and true?
PRAYER: Father, make me a true worshipper of Thee. Renew my life so that my faith is not only confessed with words but manifested in deeds, showing the reality of Thy Spirit within me.
