PAUL: HIS LETTER TO THE CORINTHIANS
 
Paul also wrote three letters to the saints in Corinth because of the many concerns that arose within the Corinthian church. One of these letters was not preserved in the biblical canon, perhaps because its content was too weighty for us even today. The Lord knows the reason. What remains clear is that these letters reveal the many struggles of a local church of Jesus Christ, reminding us of one simple truth: there is no such thing as a perfect church on earth.
 
How evident are divisions and factions in our churches today! Many place their loyalty in favoured leaders rather than in the Lord. The world esteems eloquence and logic, and so believers often follow leaders who impress with words rather than those who faithfully proclaim the truth of God. Too often, people submit to personalities instead of submitting to the Word.
 
The Christians in Corinth boasted of their spiritual gifts, especially the ability to speak in other languages. They abused these gifts, turning them into tools of pride and hypocrisy. Charity, faith, and hope were set aside for personal gain. They sought miraculous signs rather than the greatest miracle of all: the saving work of Jesus Christ.
 
Even the Lord’s Supper was corrupted. Many came not to partake reverently of the Bread and the Cup, but to feast upon their own food. Because of this careless attitude, Paul warned that many were weak and even dying, having dishonoured the sacred remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice.
 
These are but a few of the concerns Paul addressed. We must not follow the Corinthian example. Instead, let us enjoy fellowship in unity, encouraging one another to labour together for Christ’s sake. Let us use the gifts God has given us rightly, not to compete or exalt ourselves, but to glorify Him who gave Himself for us. Let us prepare our hearts spiritually when we partake of the Lord’s Supper, remembering with reverence the One who died for our salvation.
