PAUL: HIS LETTER TO THE PHILIPPIANS
 
Paul’s ministry even in prison made him an important person in the annals of church history. Paul first preached the Gospel in Europe in the city of Philippi. His first convert was a woman named Lydia, and from that beginning, a ministry was established on the European continent. Many other churches were planted because Paul obeyed the Macedonian call, choosing God’s direction over his own desire to go eastward.
 
The church at Philippi was mindful of Paul’s needs, sending their care through Epaphroditus. Yet, along with their gift, came troubling news of contention within the congregation. Two women, likely with followers behind them, were striving against each other, creating a division in the church (cf. Phil 4:2-3).
 
Churches are not immune to such conflicts. Instead of loving one another as Christ loves us, envy and pride often arise. Some desire to be exalted as leaders, demanding others to follow them. Others resist, forming cliques and pursuing their own agendas.
 
But this is not the Lord’s design for His family. Christ is the Head, and all must submit to Him. He alone is the rightful Authority in the church. Leaders and members alike must be subject to the headship of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil 2:10-11).
 
This does not mean members should disregard their pastors and elders. On the contrary, when we submit to Christ and His Word, we will also submit to the leaders He has ordained to shepherd His church. Divisions and factions arise when members fail to acknowledge Christ as the true Leader and neglect the authority He has entrusted to His servants. Therefore, let us read and obey the Word of God. Let us listen to our God-ordained leaders and follow them as they follow Christ. Let us worship our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and serve Him faithfully.
 
THOUGHT: Am I obedient to the God-ordained leaders in my church?

PRAYER: Father, keep me subject unto Thee and to Thy Word.
