“…I call to remembrance the

unfeigned faith that is in thee…”

 

TIMOTHY
 
Another hero is Timothy. He came to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ through the ministry of the Apostle Paul. His grandmother Lois and mother Eunice, devout Jewesses, were also converted to Christ, though his father was a Greek. Timothy probably first heard Paul preach the Gospel in Lystra during Paul’s first missionary journey. From the second journey onward, Timothy joined Paul and remained a faithful companion in the work of the Lord. Paul described Timothy as having “unfeigned faith” (2 Tim 1:5). From childhood, he had known the Scriptures, and he followed Paul, as Paul followed Christ. In order to accompany Paul even into the synagogues of the Jews, Timothy submitted to circumcision. He was ordained by Paul and the presbytery through the laying on of hands, that he might minister to the churches of Christ.
 
What a blessing Paul received from the Lord in having such a faithful co-labourer! What encouragement to have a companion whose zeal and fervour blazed like fire in every situation, whether in peace or persecution. What comfort to know that when it was time for Paul to be taken home to glory, Timothy took the baton and continued the work God had entrusted to them. Truly, the prayer of every church should be not only for a Paul, but also for a Timothy, one who will press on to fulfil the Great Commission.
 
Timothy was always submissive to Paul’s instruction. When there was a need to go to Thessalonica, Timothy went. When Paul remained in Corinth for six months and in Ephesus for more than two years, Timothy was there by his side. When the troubled church in Corinth required attention, Timothy was willing to visit, assess the situation, and report to Paul. Even during Paul’s imprisonment in Rome, Timothy remained faithfully by his side.
 
May we not only desire to be like Paul, but also to serve as Timothy, standing alongside faithful pastors and ministers whom God has called, supporting them in the work of the Gospel.
 
THOUGHT: Am I willing to serve as a Timothy?
PRAYER: Father, grant me humility to serve as a support and encouragement to those whom Thou hast appointed to lead.
