“Not by works of righteousness

which we have done…”

 

TITUS
 
One of Paul’s trusted disciples was Titus. He was saved under Paul’s ministry. He became one of Paul’s closest assistants, accompanying him on several missionary journeys. Paul regarded Titus as his own son in the faith. Though a Greek believer, Titus was entrusted with the responsibility of ministering in Crete, to set the church in order. He was not subjected to circumcision, demonstrating that salvation is not by works of righteousness, but by the washing through regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.
 
Titus greatly assisted Paul in Corinth, a church plagued by divisions and strife. In such a troubled congregation, a trusted servant of God who could restore peace and order was invaluable. Where factions arise, someone sent by God can bring unity and reconciliation. Where fear and fighting prevail, a faithful minister can bring comfort and stability. Praise God that He does not abandon His churches to destruction, but raises up servants to preserve and strengthen them. Let those who leave for personal convenience reflect on what it means to be used of God for the good of His people and the glory of the Father.
 
We must not be passive bystanders in our churches. We must not be pew warmers who attend services without lifting prayers for the church. We must not be strangers to our own congregations, uninvolved in ministry and unaware of its needs. Such attitudes destroy the church. They are like weeds that drain the soil yet bear no fruit, hindering the work of the Lord. They are selfish, caring only for themselves, and unworthy of the eternal communion of saints. Brethren, let us not be among them!
 
Instead, let us be like Titus: faithful, supportive, and willing to serve alongside pastors and leaders whom God has ordained. Let us labour together for the sake of Christ and His church. “And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen” (Titus 3:14-15).
 
THOUGHT: Am I assisting my pastor and leaders in my church?
PRAYER: Father, open my eyes to see where I can best serve Thee with the gifts Thou hast given me.
