LUKE: THE PHYSICIAN MISSIONARY
 
Luke is another hero of church history who must not be missed. Paul mentioned Luke in his prison epistles, even up to the time of his martyrdom under Nero. Luke had accompanied Paul from at least the second missionary journey onward. A Gentile believer, Luke faithfully laboured with Paul in evangelistic missions. Paul identified him as a physician, indicating that Luke was a man of education, training and professional skill.
 
Luke was uniquely qualified to write the two-volume work of the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. Among Paul’s companions, Luke alone possessed the ability to record such detailed accounts. Under Paul’s guidance, Luke came to know the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus. In Acts, Luke was an eyewitness to many events, carefully documenting the growth of the early church.
 
Yet, Luke’s example stands in contrast to many who, though highly educated, hesitate to give up their careers to serve the Lord. They fear it would be a waste of their talent, time and treasure. Some even postpone obedience until retirement when they would feel more secured financially. But such delay reveals a heart too attached to the world. This attachment divides the heart, distracts the mind, and destroys peace. It undermines faith, weakens zeal, and dulls sensitivity to the God who loves us enough to send His only begotten Son.
 
Beloved believer, have you heard God’s call but are ignoring it out of anxiety for your future? Have you felt the burden to obey and serve God but convinced yourself that the time is not yet? Have you experienced God’s goodness but dismissed it as mere luck or chance? Beware of hardening your heart! When judicial hardening comes, all will be lost, even the soul itself.
 
Luke’s life reminds us that true service requires surrender. Luke left behind worldly pursuits to follow Christ and recorded God’s work for generations to come.
 
THOUGHT: Am I ready to leave everything behind for Christ’s sake?
