MARY: THE MOTHER OF JESUS
 
Another important character is Mary, the mother of Jesus, one of the most recognised women in Scripture. She is best known as the mother of Jesus the Messiah, and her story shines with immense faith, courage and humility. When the angel announced God’s plan, Mary responded with submission and trust: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). She praised the Lord for the privilege of being the vessel through whom the Son of God would take on flesh and dwell among men: “My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For He hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed” (Luke 1:46–48).
 
Traditions portrayed the Mary of the Bible differently by exalting her beyond what Scripture teaches. She was a humble woman who acknowledged her need for a Saviour. Though highly favoured to bear Christ, she remained a sinner who required redemption through Him. Mary never claimed divinity, nor did her role as mother of Jesus make her equal with God. She understood her calling as a servant, chosen to bring forth the Messiah, who would be incarnated to represent humanity and die on the cross as our Substitute.
 
Her life points us back to the central truth: there is no other way to be justified before a holy God except through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Salvation is not earned by works or human merit. Only Jesus saves. He alone is our Mediator and Redeemer. No man or woman can add to His finished work. The only sacrifice that brings forgiveness is His atoning death on Calvary. Those who trust in their own righteousness will face the wages of sin: death followed by eternal separation from God in the Lake of Fire. Mary’s faith reminds us that salvation is found in Christ alone, and that humility and obedience are the marks of true discipleship.
 
THOUGHT: Am I trusting in the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ? Or am I relying on my own works?
PRAYER: Father, help me to seek my salvation in Christ alone. Teach me to rest fully in the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
