TABITHA: FULL OF GOOD WORKS AND ALMSDEEDS
Another heroine is Tabitha, also called Dorcas (meaning gazelle in Greek), who is remembered in Scripture as a faithful disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. Her life was marked by compassion and generosity, for she was known as a woman “full of good works and almsdeeds” (Acts 9:36). She consistently helped those in need, especially the poor, showing the love of Christ through her deeds.
Suddenly, Tabitha fell ill and died. The believers in Joppa, grieving over her death, sent for Peter, hoping for God’s intervention. When Peter arrived, he found widows and friends mourning. They showed him the garments Tabitha had lovingly made for them. She was deeply beloved in her community because she had given herself selflessly to others, especially the least among them.
Tabitha’s life is a powerful testimony that true faith is not only professed, but lived out in action. Her works reflected the regenerating power of God in her heart, demonstrating what it means to be “doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22).
Peter prayed and then spoke two simple words: “Tabitha, arise” (Acts 9:40). Immediately, she opened her eyes and sat up. This miracle brought great joy to the believers and caused many to put their faith in the Lord. Even in her death and restoration, Tabitha’s life pointed people to Christ.
Her example challenges us today: Are we living out our Christian testimony so that others see Christ in us? Have we truly repented of our sins and believed in Jesus as Lord and Saviour? Are we walking in the Spirit, demonstrating the new life God has given us?
THOUGHT: Am I living as a true witness for the Lord Jesus, showing my faith through works of love?
PRAYER: Father, fill me with Thy Holy Spirit, that I may live in obedience to Thy will, serving others with compassion and reflecting the life of Christ in all I do.
