CORNELIUS: THE CONVERTED ROMAN CENTURION
 
One unique hero is Cornelius, a Roman centurion of the Italian Regiment, who is described by Luke as “a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway” (Acts 10:2). Though a Gentile, he had embraced the Jewish faith, reading the Scriptures, observing regular hours of prayer, and showing compassion to the poor.
 
One day, the Lord gave Cornelius a vision in which an angel instructed him to send for Peter in Joppa. Obediently, Cornelius dispatched trusted men to bring the Apostle. When Peter arrived, Cornelius fell at his feet in reverence, but Peter corrected him, reminding him that he was only a man. As Peter preached the Word, the Holy Spirit fell upon Cornelius and his household, and they began to speak in other tongues. Peter then baptised them, confirming their full inclusion into the family of God.
 
Cornelius stands out as one of the first prominent Gentiles to believe in Jesus Christ. His conversion was costly. To confess Christ as Lord was dangerous both among the religious Jews, who viewed Christianity as heresy, and among the Romans, who often despised faith in a crucified Messiah. Yet, Cornelius did not hold back. He openly identified with Jesus, receiving baptism and living as His follower.
 
This transformation illustrates the power of God’s irresistible grace. Cornelius no longer sought the approval of men, but of God. He no longer lived for himself but for his Saviour. He no longer served merely his earthly superiors, but the heavenly King. His conversion impacted not only his own life, but also those around him, as many came to believe through his testimony. Cornelius reminds us that true conversion is not hidden; it is a bold confession of Christ, lived out in obedience and service, regardless of the cost.
 
THOUGHT: Is my conversion a living testimony that impacts others for Christ?
PRAYER: Father, grant me courage not to fear confessing Jesus as my Lord. May I live and serve faithfully, seeking only Thy approval and bringing others to faith through my witness.
