EPAPHRAS: FAITHFUL MINISTER OF CHRIST
Our next hero is Epaphras, one who was commended by the Apostle Paul as a faithful minister of the church at Colosse (Col 1:7). Many believe that he may have been the founder of that church, possibly one of Paul’s students during his ministry at the School of Tyrannus in Ephesus, where “all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks” (Acts 19:10).
Paul reminded the Colossian believers that they had learned the true Gospel from Epaphras. His teaching stood in contrast to the false doctrines of early gnosticism that had threatened the church. Paul’s strong affirmation of Epaphras served to silence opposition and strengthen the believers’ confidence in his ministry.
Epaphras did not rely on his own wisdom or strength. He prayed earnestly and sought the Lord’s help, remembering the faithful teaching of Paul. His example reminds us that God has placed Christian leaders in our lives: parents in the family, teachers in school, pastors and elders in the church, to guide us in His Word.
Above all, we rejoice that as born-again believers, we have the indwelling Holy Spirit. He counsels us, teaches us the truth of Scripture, and produces fruit in our lives. The Spirit also directs us to godly counsel and guidance when we face trials or attacks from the enemy. We are not left to solve our problems alone. The Lord provides His help through His Spirit, through His people, and even through circumstances He ordains.
Epaphras’ faithfulness calls us to depend continually on the Spirit of God, to pray earnestly, and to trust the Lord’s provision in every situation.
THOUGHT: Am I continually asking the Holy Spirit to help me? Or do I rely on my own strength?
PRAYER: Father, teach me to seek Thy help in every trial. Fill me with Thy Spirit, that I may walk faithfully, depend on Thy guidance, and glorify Thee in all things.
