ARISTARCHUS: A FAITHFUL FELLOW WORKER
Our next hero is another less-heard-of name, yet he did good for the work of the Lord through Paul. Aristarchus, whose name means “best ruler,” was a stedfast companion of the Apostle Paul. He is described as a Macedonian from Thessalonica (Acts 27:2). Though little is known of his background or how he came to faith, some suggested that he might have been a Jewish convert to Christianity. His first mention in Scripture is during the riot in Ephesus, when he and Gaius were seized by the angry mob stirred up by Demetrius and the idol-makers of Diana (Acts 19:21‑29).
From that point onward, Aristarchus proved himself a faithful co-labourer. He travelled with Paul toward Jerusalem and accompanied him on several journeys. After the riot, Paul spent three months in Greece before returning through Macedonia, and Aristarchus was among those who joined him (Acts 20:1-4).
Paul later referred to Aristarchus as his “fellowprisoner” in his letter to the Colossians (Col 4:10). He was with Paul during the perilous sea voyage to Rome and remained by his side even in imprisonment. Aristarchus’ loyalty was not limited to times of peace or freedom. He was willing to suffer alongside Paul, partaking of his hardship for the sake of Christ.
His example reminds us of the rare and noble gift of faithful companionship in ministry. Many can offer kind words or material support, but few are willing to endure suffering and imprisonment with God’s servants. Aristarchus stood as one who encouraged Paul not only in word, but in presence, embodying the spirit of true Christian brotherhood.
Such men are the Lord’s provision. Food, clothing and shelter may be found, but how precious is the brother-in-Christ who remains with you, sharing the load of your trials for the sake of Christ.
THOUGHT: Am I willing to become a true fellow prisoner with my leaders, sharing their burdens for Christ?
PRAYER: Father, grant me devotion and loyalty to Thy anointed servants. Make me stedfast in encouragement, and faithful in companionship, willing to suffer for the sake of the Gospel.
