NYMPHAS: A HOST OF THE CHURCH
In his letter to the Colossians, Paul saluted a man named Nymphas and “the church which is in his house” (Col 4:15). Nymphas might have been from Colosse or nearby Laodicea, but what is clear is that his household had embraced the Gospel. His family, likely consisting of numerous members, opened their home for the worship of God, providing a place of fellowship and encouragement for believers.
In the early days of Christianity, there were no dedicated buildings for worship. Under persecution from both Romans and Jews, believers often gathered in private homes. Nymphas’ household became one such sanctuary, a place where prayers were lifted, hymns sung, and Scripture read. His example was not unique. Paul also mentioned other households that hosted churches, such as that of Priscilla and Aquila (Rom 16:5) and Philemon in Colosse. Yet, it was never easy. Hosting believers meant risking hostility from devout Jews, atheistic Romans, and idolatrous pagans. It required courage, love and deep faith in the Lord.
Today, many churches struggle to find families willing to host even occasional fellowship gatherings. Excuses abound, but often the root is a lack of love and faith. In places where persecution is minimal, the challenge is not external opposition, but internal reluctance. How different Nymphas was. He counted it a privilege to open his home for the Lord’s work and His people.
What a blessing it is when a household becomes a place of worship and fellowship. To host believers is to glorify God, magnify His Word and strengthen the bonds of Christian unity. Though preparation may be demanding, and not everyone may be satisfied, yet the joy of serving the saints and the honour of glorifying Christ far outweigh the inconvenience.
THOUGHT: Am I willing to open my home to host fellowship with the brethren, counting it a privilege to serve the Lord in this way?
PRAYER: Father, make me a joyful host of believers in the place Thou hast provided for me and my family. May my home be a sanctuary of worship, fellowship and love, bringing glory to Thy name.
