TROPHIMUS: PAUL’S CO-LABOURER
 
This next hero may not be a familiar name to many, but his work must be familiarised because of his contribution to the historical records. Trophimus, whose name of Greek origin means “nourishing” or “well-fed,” was a Gentile believer from Ephesus who played a significant role in the ministry of the Apostle Paul. He was among those chosen, along with Tychicus and six others, to carry the collection to Jerusalem (Acts 20:4‑6). His dedication to the work of the Lord was evident, even when he was sick (2 Tim 4:20).
 
His presence in Jerusalem became a point of contention. The Jews from Asia accused Paul of defiling the temple by bringing Gentiles inside. They stirred up a riot, crying: “This is the man, that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place” (Acts 21:28). They had seen Paul with Trophimus in the city and supposed he had brought him into the temple. This incident highlights the deep tension between Jewish customs and the inclusion of Gentiles in the early church.
 
Trophimus’s story reflects the rejection Gentile believers often faced, and the struggles of the early church to reconcile Jewish traditions with the new covenant in Christ. Yet Paul declared the mystery revealed by God: “That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel” (Eph 3:6). Through Christ, Gentiles were no longer outsiders but full participants in God’s plan of redemption.
 
How we Gentiles should praise the Lord for His grace in including us in His church! Trophimus’ life reminds us that salvation is not limited by heritage or tradition, but is extended to all who believe in Christ. 
 
THOUGHT: Am I truly thankful for the salvation I have received through Christ, recognising it as pure grace?
PRAYER: Father, help me to realise the great favour Thou hast extended unto us Gentiles, making us part of the body of Christ. May my heart overflow with gratitude for Thy mercy and grace.
