ERASTUS: THE CHAMBERLAIN OF THE CITY
 
Similarly, Erastus is not so well-known, but his deeds are known to God. Erastus was a co-worker of the Apostle Paul, a civil servant in Corinth, and a believer in Jesus Christ. Scripture records: “So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season” (Acts 19:22). Paul’s confidence in sending Erastus alongside Timothy showed that Erastus was a trusted and proven servant of the Lord, capable of carrying out important tasks with diligence and faithfulness.
 
Erastus is identified as the “chamberlain of the city” (Rom 16:23). The term refers to a steward or manager, one entrusted with overseeing public funds and properties, similar to a treasurer or overseer today. His role in civic life demonstrated that he was trustworthy in his secular responsibilities, and Paul recognised him as equally reliable in spiritual matters. Truly, if one can be faithful in earthly stewardship, he can be trusted with the riches of God’s kingdom.
 
Jesus taught: “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much… If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?” (Luke 16:10-11). This warning reminds us that many stumble in the temptation of money, even pastors and elders. The love of wealth has sidelined countless servants of the Lord. But Erastus’ example shows us that faithfulness in both earthly and spiritual stewardship brings honour to Christ.
 
May the Lord spare us from the snares of greed and grant us hearts of contentment. True gain is found not in riches, but in Christ Himself. Whether in lack or abundance, He is our all in all.
 
THOUGHT: Am I easily tempted by money matters, or am I faithful in both earthly and spiritual stewardship?
PRAYER: Father, grant me a heart that treasures Thee above all else. Teach me contentment, that I may resist the temptations of wealth, and remain faithful in serving Thee.
