APPHIA AND ARCHIPPUS: FELLOW SOLDIERS
 
Apphia and Archippus may not be so familiar, but Scripture records their names. Paul mentioned Apphia and Archippus in his letter to Philemon (Philem 1:2). From the context, many believe Apphia was Philemon’s wife and Archippus their son. Together, this household hosted the church that met in their home, serving as a model of family devotion to the Lord.
 
Apphia, called “beloved” in the feminine form, exemplifies the role of a minister’s wife who faithfully supports the work of her husband. Her concern was not for worldly adornment or vanity, but for the people of God who gathered in their home. She prepared the house for worship, ensuring that the congregation could meet in an atmosphere of reverence and fellowship. What a comfort it must have been for Philemon to have a wife who gave him the freedom to focus on preparing spiritual food for the church, knowing she was faithfully caring for the practical needs of the assembly.
 
Archippus, described as “our fellowsoldier” (Philem 1:2) was likely assisting in the ministry at Colosse. His diligence reflected the exhortation of Joshua: “…as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Josh 24:15). Perhaps he rose early to prepare for the Lord’s work, ensuring that the Word would be faithfully preached and heard. His example reminds us of the joy of fathers whose sons are actively engaged in the service of the Lord, prioritising worship over worldly distractions.
 
This family’s devotion was not nepotism but a testimony of faithfulness. Each member served the Lord in their own role, united in their commitment to Christ. Paul’s commendation of them encourages us to cultivate families where every member is involved in the work of the Gospel, serving together in love and unity.
 
THOUGHT: Is my family united in our service for the Lord, each fulfilling the role He has assigned?
PRAYER: Father, help each member of my family to be involved in Thy work. Unite us in devotion and service, that our household may glorify Thee together.
