IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH: A FAITHFUL WITNESS
 
This next hero is Ignatius of Antioch. One of the most well-known Apostolic Fathers, he served as bishop of Antioch in Syria (modern-day Türkiye). He is remembered chiefly for seven letters written on his journey to Rome, where he was condemned to die in the imperial games for his Christian testimony. Arrested for his faith, he was sent to Rome to be killed by wild beasts.
 
Along the way, Ignatius was allowed to receive visitors from the churches of the towns he passed through. In gratitude, he wrote letters of encouragement and warning. His “Letter to the Romans” is especially striking: he pleaded with them not to intervene to save him from martyrdom, for he welcomed death as the means by which he would become “pure bread of Christ”, ground by the teeth of beasts. These letters, written around AD 110, remain a powerful witness to his devotion and courage.
 
Ignatius also used his letters to warn the churches against dangerous heresies. He opposed the Judaisers, who rejected the authority of the New Testament, and the docetists, who denied the reality of Christ’s suffering and death. Ignatius insisted on the truth of Christ’s incarnation and atoning sacrifice, reminding believers that the Gospel rests on the reality of Jesus Christ in the flesh. His writings provide invaluable insight into the life and struggles of the early church at the dawn of the 2nd century.
 
His ministry of warning is just as vital today. In an age where false teachers and false prophets abound, the church must remain vigilant. Many prefer “gracious and living messages” that avoid confrontation, but the trumpet call against false doctrine must never be silenced. Ignatius’ example reminds us that love for Christ and His truth requires courage to confront error and stedfastness to endure suffering.

PRAYER: Father, grant Thy people discerning minds and stedfast hearts, that we may recognise and resist false teachings. Keep us faithful to Christ and His truth, even in the face of opposition.
