PAPIAS OF HIERAPOLIS
 
Papias of Hierapolis, one of the Apostolic Fathers, lived in the late first and early second century AD. Serving as bishop in Hierapolis (in modern-day Türkiye), he ministered during a time when believers deeply valued teachings passed down directly from those who had walked with Jesus’ disciples. Early sources such as Irenaeus (“Against Heresies” 5.33.4) and Eusebius (“Ecclesiastical History” 3.39) described Papias as a vital link between the apostolic generation and the next wave of church leaders. Tradition holds that as a young man, he learned under the aged Apostle John himself.
 
Papias’ life overlapped with the close of the apostolic era, a pivotal moment when the church sought to preserve eyewitness testimonies of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. He devoted himself to gathering accurate accounts, echoing the careful approach described in Luke 1:1-2: “Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us…”
 
Around the middle of the second century AD, Papias wrote “The Interpretation of the Sayings of the Lord,” a five-volume work recording what he had received from older Christians who had known the Apostles. Though the full text has been lost, fragments preserved in Irenaeus’ writings reveal Papias’ strong millennial views and his deep concern for faithfully transmitting the words and works of Christ. Scholars lament the loss of his complete writings, recognising the light they would have shed on the beliefs and practices of the early church.
 
Yet even though human writings may perish, the Word of God endures forever. Papias’ devotion reminds us to treasure the Scriptures as the perfectly preserved testimony of Christ. His efforts encourage believers today, showing that the promises of God have been experienced and confirmed by faithful witnesses across generations.

PRAYER: Father, may I cling to Thy 100% inspired and 100% preserved Word. May I cling to Thy truth with confidence, knowing that heaven and earth may pass away, but Thy Word will never fail.
