TERTULLIAN
 
Tertullian, one of the great early Christian authors, was born around AD 160 in Carthage, in the Roman province of Africa. The son of a Roman centurion, he received an excellent education in literature and rhetoric. Converted to Christianity in his late thirties, he devoted himself to defending the faith against pagan critics and heretical movements. His eloquence in Latin earned him the title “Father of Latin Theology.”
 
Tertullian was responsible for coining some of the most enduring theological terms in Christian tradition. It is in his writings that we first encounter the Latin word trinitas (“Trinity”) to describe the relationship of Father, Son and Holy Spirit (one God in three persons). This formula remains foundational to Christian doctrine today. He also made significant contributions to Christology, articulating the truth that Christ is “one person in two natures,” fully divine and fully human, a teaching later affirmed by the Council of Chalcedon. He authored numerous apologetic and theological works, many of which remain quotable and influential. His famous statement, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church,” continues to inspire believers facing persecution. Tertullian was greatly used of God to define and defend essential doctrines, and the church still benefits from his ministry centuries later.
 
Later in life, however, Tertullian aligned himself with Montanism, a sect known for its strict moralism and expectation of Christ’s imminent return. While his zeal was sincere, this choice reminds us that even great leaders are susceptible to error. Orthodoxy alone does not guarantee safety from deception; we must continually depend on the Lord and the guidance of His Spirit. Many leaders begin well but stumble when they trust in their own eloquence or wisdom rather than God’s Word. Tertullian’s life is both an inspiration and a warning: we must remain humble, vigilant and rooted in Scripture.
 
THOUGHT: Am I keeping my steps according to God’s Word? Or am I leaning on my own wisdom?
PRAYER: Father, guard me from pride and deception, and grant me grace to earnestly contend for the faith. May my life be guided by Thy Spirit, that I may walk faithfully in truth and holiness.
