PERPETUA
 
In AD 203, Perpetua of Carthage, North Africa, was martyred for her Christian faith. Only twenty-two years old, she was a wife, the mother of a nursing infant, and the daughter of an aged father. Arrested along with her slave Felicity and several companions, she refused to renounce Christ despite the desperate pleas of her father and the pressure of Roman officials.
 
Perpetua and her companions were condemned to die in the arena during festivities for the emperor’s birthday. They were flogged, torn by wild animals and finally executed by the sword. Her courage and stedfastness became one of the most powerful testimonies of early Christian martyrdom.
 
Educated and articulate, Perpetua recorded much of her experience in her diary, which remains one of the earliest firsthand accounts of Christian martyrdom. Her writings also include details about Felicity, who shared her fate. While later generations have tried to reshape her story, some portraying her as a flawless saint, others as a feminist symbol, her true witness was simple faithfulness to Jesus Christ, who gave His life for her. Perpetua’s life reminds us that the power of martyrdom lies not in human strength or extraordinary works, but in obedience to God’s Word. She embodied Christ’s teaching: “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” (Matt 10:37). Her sacrifice was not about rejecting family or seeking recognition, but about loving Christ above all, even unto death.
 
THOUGHT: Do I have the simple faith to believe and obey what the Bible says, without compromise?
PRAYER: Father, grant me a wise and willing heart to obey Thy Word. Strengthen me with simple faith, that I may live and, if called, die for Christ. Let my obedience shine as a witness to Thy power and grace.
