BLANDINA

BLANDINA
 
To many, it may seem unlikely that a young slave girl could be remembered as a hero of the faith. Yet Blandina, who died in AD 177 in Lyon (in France) during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, stands as one of the most inspiring martyrs of the early church. She had no Roman citizenship, no rights as a slave, was young and described as physically weak. But by her faith, her encouragement of fellow believers, and her courageous death in the amphitheatre, she strengthened the church in its time of trial.
 
The historian Eusebius of Caesarea (AD 260-339) preserved the record of her martyrdom through an ancient letter describing her death and that of other Christians in Lyon. The letter testifies that through Blandina’s humble virtues, Christ revealed that what the world despises is honoured in God’s sight. Her weakness became the stage for Christ’s strength to be perfected. Interrogated by the governor, Blandina endured torture and public humiliation. Christians who refused to renounce their faith were condemned to wild beasts, becoming a spectacle in place of gladiatorial games. Blandina was the last to die. Hung from a post, she was exposed to animals, but they would not attack.
 
Foxe’s “Book of Martyrs” records her extraordinary endurance: “She was endued with so much fortitude, that those who successively tortured her from morning to night were quite worn out with fatigue… amazed to see her still breathing whilst her body was torn and laid open. The blessed woman recovered fresh vigour in the act of confession; and it was an evident annihilation of all her pains, to say — ‘I am a Christian, and no evil is committed among us.’”
 
Blandina’s testimony reminds us that true strength is not found in human power but in Christ. Her life and death proclaim that even the weakest vessel can display the glory of God when surrendered to Him.
 
THOUGHT: Do I have courage to declare my faith in Christ, even in the face of death?
PRAYER: Father, may Thy strength be made perfect in my weakness. May others see Thy faithfulness through my life, and may I stand firm in Thy will, even unto death, for the glory of Christ.
