ARNOBIUS THE ELDER
 
Arnobius the Elder (also called Afer) lived in Africa during the reign of Emperor Diocletian (AD 284-305). Originally a pagan and a teacher of rhetoric at Sicca Veneria, he later embraced the Christian faith. He was even the master of Lactantius, another great Christian apologist. Because of Arnobius’ former paganism, the local bishop was suspicious of him. To prove the sincerity of his conversion, Arnobius composed seven books “Adversus Nationes” (“Against the Pagans”) around AD 303 (before his baptism).
 
In these writings, Arnobius defended Christianity against pagan accusations and exposed the inconsistencies of pagan belief. He attacked Neoplatonism, anthropomorphism and heathen mythology, and condemned the worship of images, temples and rituals. His tone was not that of a reluctant catechumen, but of a convinced Christian, voluntarily undertaking the task of defending the faith against reproach.
 
Arnobius demonstrated extensive knowledge of pagan worship and literature, making his work a valuable source for understanding the religious practices of his time. His apologetics was distinctive in that he not only refuted charges against Christianity, but also sought to show that Christianity itself could be demonstrated by evidence.
 
Arnobius reminds us that defending the faith is not merely about answering critics, but also about bearing witness to the truth of Christ with wisdom and courage. His example challenges us to stand firm, to pass on the Word of life to future generations, and to answer false accusations with grace.

PRAYER: Father, grant me courage to stand for Thee. Make me ready to share Thy love with those in need, and to defend the faith, once delivered to the saints, with humility and boldness.
