CHEERFUL OBEDIENCE
OCTOBER 6

Genesis 37:12-17

CHEERFUL OBEDIENCE

One day, when his brothers were far away in Shechem feeding the family’s flock of sheep, Jacob sent Joseph to find out how they and the flock were doing. We notice that Joseph was very cheerful and obedient as he promptly obeyed his father. He did not find it a chore to look for his brothers who were miles from home. In those days, walking was the most common mode of transport.

His brothers, however, had left Shechem. Perhaps, the sheep had eaten up most of the grass of the green pastures there. So they moved to Dothan which was about another twelve miles to the north. Joseph carried on walking on for another twelve miles to find his brothers.

Wow! Where did Joseph get his stamina from? I would have given up after the first twelve miles, won’t you? Let’s put it this way. Even if Joseph had given up at this point in time, his father would not have blamed him. However, Joseph was a responsible guy and was determined to complete the task his father trusted him with. He did not so much as murmur.

God sent Jesus to earth to show how man ought to live righteously and to die to save us from our sins. He had to suffer man’s mocking, ill treatment and rejection. Did Jesus give up because it was too hard a struggle to carry out His mission? No, Jesus persevered to do God’s will and obeyed to the very end. He completed the task His Father gave Him to do. Joseph had the same attitude.

Young Joseph knew that he could not rest till he had carried out what his father told him to do. How happy and relieved he must have been when he finally reached Dothan and found his brothers! Let’s learn from Joseph. It pays to be cheerfully obedient.

Check whether you have cheerfully obeyed your parents in these tasks.
Draw a smiley face if you have done so.

1. Don’t waste food.
2. Wash your hands before eating.
3. Wipe the table after dinner.
4. Bring mum a cup of water whenever she requests for it .
5. Pack up your toys after playing.
6. Complete the worksheets.

Thought: Cheerful obedience is a good habit that pleases the Lord.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to obey my parents in all that they ask me to do as I know it pleases You. This I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
