OCTOBER 31
Hebrews 11:22
BE A JOSEPH
We must exercise our faith in the promises of God because they are true and sure. Doubting God’s word dishonours Him. Joseph was wise to please God with his steadfast faith. He believed God when God promised to visit the children of Israel in later years. Therefore, just before his death, he instructed his people to carry his remains to Canaan to be buried there. Today’s text is in Hebrews chapter 11, often known as the chapter on the heroes of faith. Here, Joseph is given a place of honour for this.
Be a Joseph. Believe in all the promises of God. What is the most important promise in the whole Bible? It is the famous John 3:16 which says, "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life." If you believe in what God says here, you would believe in Jesus, trusting that you would receive everlasting life.
What are the other promises in the Bible? For the child of God, another important promise is that in Hebrews 13:5b, which says, "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." This tells of the continual presence of God to guide and to protect us. We need that. In this world of conflicts and confusion, it is most comforting to know that God is always with us. Many promises in the Bible have already come true. Search the Bible for more of God’s promises. Isn’t it exciting to know that they will all come true one by one?
Joseph’s life was a wonderful example for us because of his faith. It was one of righteousness, full of wisdom, compassion, courage, patience and integrity. Indeed it was a God honouring life that pleases God. May we be like Joseph.
Thought: All the promises of God are better than silver and gold!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, let me learn about your promises and believe in them with all my heart. I thank You for this month’s lessons on Joseph and I pray that I’d be like him, always trusting in You. I pray also that I’d learn humility and patience so clearly seen in the life of Joseph too. This is my plea in Jesus’ name. Amen.
