FLEE YOUTHFUL LUSTS
NOVEMBER 2

2 Timothy 2:22

FLEE YOUTHFUL LUSTS

Ivan’s mother was shaking him gently, and he struggled to wake up. He sat up and opened his eyes wide. "I had to run!" he said in a shaky voice. Mom sat beside him on the bed. "I heard you yell," she said. "What were you running from?" Taking a deep breath, Ivan said, "I must have been dreaming, and… and soldiers were shooting at me. I had to run!"

Mom frowned. "What did you watch on TV at Kevin’s last night?" she asked. "I… I don’t remember the name of the movie," he said, "but it was scary. I shouldn’t have watched it, but everyone else did. So what else could I do?"

Mom looked at him thoughtfully. "Do you remember hearing Grandpa tell how Jesus helped him stop drinking?" she asked. Ivan nodded. "Remember what Grandpa did whenever he had to go near a bar after he was saved?" asked Mom.

Ivan thought for a moment. "Grandpa said whenever an errand took him near a bar or liquor store, he’d cross the street to avoid it," Ivan replied slowly. Mom nodded. "Jesus had helped him quit drinking," she said, "but Grandpa knew it would be difficult to resist temptation if he went to any place where there was alcohol."

"I guess being around alcohol would make it a lot harder not to drink," agreed Ivan. "Yes," said Mom, "and Grandpa never went into a bar again as far as I know. He stayed sober for the rest of his life. Now… how does that apply to you?"

"Well, I… I’m not sure. Are you saying I shouldn’t go to Kevin’s house anymore?" asked Ivan. Mom shrugged. "Well, think about it," she said. "You’ve watched bad movies at Kevin’s several times, so don’t you think it might be a good idea not to go there unless you have definite plans to do something other than watch TV?" Ivan was quiet for a moment. Then he asked, "Would it be okay to invite Kevin over here more often?"

"Good idea," agreed Mom. She tucked the blankets around Ivan. "If you let Him, Jesus will help you make the right choices. But you need to do your part, Ivan, by not putting yourself in the way of temptation."

Thought: Are there places where you find it hard to do what is right? – Places where people influence you to check out bad internet sites, to tell lies, to cheat, or to do some other wrong thing?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder to flee from bad things or temptation or lusts. Help me stay away from them. And please, heavenly Father, give me the strength to do what is right. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.
