SERVE THE LORD
NOVEMBER 8

1 Samuel 12:24

SERVE THE LORD

Ming stared at a painting in an art store window. It was a picture of two hands clasped in prayer. "Why would an artist paint hands, Mom?" asked Ming. "I think there are much more interesting things to paint." Mom smiled. "That’s a well-known painting," she said. "I recently read an article about it. The artist painted the hands of someone who was very special to him. Not everyone agrees on whose hands they are, but this article claims they’re his brother’s."

"Why did he paint his brother’s hands instead of his face?" asked Ming.
"What’s the story?"

"According to the article, the painter who went by the name of Albrecht was born into a very poor family. Both he and his brother dreamed of becoming artists, and they decided together that one of them would study art while the other worked to support him. Then they would trade places, and the other would study art. They tossed a coin to see who would study first, and Albrecht won. His brother worked hard - probably in the mines - while Albrecht studied. By the time Albrecht finished his studies, he was already famous."

"Cool!" said Ming. "Did his brother get to be a good artist, too?" Mom shook her head. "By that time, his fingers were stiff and rough from his hard work," she said, "and he had arthritis in his right hand. He was no longer able to paint. To Albrecht, those sacrificial hands were beautiful, and he very lovingly painted them to pay homage to his brother."

"Wow! I hope he helped his brother in other ways, too!" exclaimed
Ming. "After all, his brother really sacrificed his own dream to support him."

"Yes," agreed Mom, and after a moment added, "I’m thinking of some other hands - hands of someone who made an even greater sacrifice, and it was for us." "You mean Jesus, don’t you?" asked Ming.

Mom nodded. "He gave His life for us so that we can have our sins forgiven," she said. "His hands bear the print of the nails that held Him to the cross. Surely we should do all we can to honor Him."

Thought: Are you willing to do anything for Jesus? Will you tell others about Him? Will you serve Him by serving others?
Prayer: Our heavenly Father, thank You for today’s reminder of the great love of Jesus. It must have been amazingly difficult for Jesus to leave the glory of heaven and come down to live on this sinful earth as a human being. Worst of all, He had to suffer and died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sin. When I think of all He had suffered for me, it makes me want to do all I can for Him. So help me serve You more. This I pray in Jesus’ name - Amen.
