James 2:18
DO OUR ACTIONS TELL OF OUR FAITH?
"Look!" exclaimed Kevin as he pointed toward the ditch. "Someone knocked the stop sign down again."
Dad nodded and stopped the car. "I wish," he said as he got out, "that people would learn to slow down when they round this corner." Kevin and Brandon got out of the car, too. "What are you going to do?" asked Kevin.
"We’ll see if we can put the sign back where it belongs," replied Dad. "If drivers don’t stop at this corner, there could be a serious accident." He walked down into the ditch. "Help me carry it back to the road."
"We’re right behind you," said Brandon.
Together the three of them lifted the sign and carried it to the corner. They tried to stand it up against the jagged pole still sticking out of the ground. However, it kept falling over. Dad frowned. "We’ll lay it down against the pole," he said. "That will have to do until the Traffic Police Department fixes it properly."
"But when we put it down like this, the sign lays sideways," said Kevin. "Won’t it be hard to read?"
"Yes," said Dad, "but motorists can recognise it by its shape and color, not just by what it says."
"That’s something like what Brother Michael told us in Sunday school last week," said Brandon. "He says there are ways people can recognise us as Christians – sort of like the way people will recognise this sign."
"They’ll recognise us by our shape and color?" asked Kevin in jest. Brandon laughed. "No, but people can recognise Christians by what they do as well as by what they say – or sometimes by what they don’t do or say. Brother Michael says we can’t expect others to know we’re Christians if we swear or lie or cheat like lots of kids do."
"Brother Michael is right," agreed Dad. "People should know we’re Christians by our words – but more so, our attitude and actions should show that we belong to God."
Thought: Can you be recognised as a Christian by the way you live?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, may I live my life wisely. It’s great to tell others that I belong to Jesus, but may my actions speak louder than my words. May my Christian faith be shown through my attitude actions. This I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
