BE DOERS, NOT JUST HEARERS
NOVEMBER 14

James 1:22

BE DOERS, NOT JUST HEARERS

I can hardly wait for our kids’ choir to sing this morning," said Su Ling excitedly. "This is the first Sunday we’re going to sign the words, too."

As her choir sang, Su Ling not only watched the choir conductor, but also Toby, a young deaf boy sitting in the front row. Toby was watching attentively, and Su Ling felt warm inside. It was exciting to sing in a way that a deaf person could understand, too. Later, when Pastor spoke, she again noticed Toby carefully watching the interpreter.

That afternoon, Su Ling’s brother wanted her to help him with an experiment. "Oh, Kevin! I’m sick of your dumb experiments!" Su Ling grumbled. "They’re silly, and none of them works. Most of them don’t even make sense!"

Kevin sighed and went to his room, but he returned a few minutes later. "I really need help with this," he said. Su Ling ignored him. "Please, Su Ling," he pleaded, but she refused to help. "Get away from me," said Su Ling crossly. Then she added some other mean comments.

Mother looked at her sadly. "I was just remembering that you told us how eagerly your friend Toby listened to God’s message this morning," she said. "Even though his ears didn’t work, he still heard. But I’m not sure you heard the message."

Su Ling scowled. "I ain’t deaf," she said. "Of course I heard Pastor’s message."

Mom raised her brows. "Well, Pastor said Christians need to build each other up and help one another," she said. "After the service I saw Toby helping others. He helped push Mrs. Ong’s wheelchair for her. I think his actions showed that he heard the message with his heart even though he couldn’t hear with his ears. Listening to the way you’ve been speaking to your brother, I wonder if this morning’s message stopped at your ears."

Su Ling blushed. She knew Mom was right. Hearing God’s message with one’s ears was important. But, responding with one’s heart was even more important.

Thought: Be ye doers of God’s Word and not just hearers!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I pray that You will help me to pay attention whenever Your Word is read or taught. May I never let it go in one ear and out the other. Help me think hard about it and let it correct my sinful attitudes and help me do things that pleases In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
