WE ARE ADOPTED CHILDREN TOO!
"We had a new girl in our class today," said Leng Leng as she nibbled on a cookie. "Her name is Anna. She’s from an orphanage in Cambodia, and a local family – the Lees – adopted her."
"How wonderful for her!" exclaimed Mother.
"Deborah said that she pities Anna because she doesn’t have any real family of her own," added Leng Leng. Mother sat down at the table. "That’s ridiculous," she declared. "Of course she has a family! The minute Anna was adopted, she became as much a part of the Lee family as if she had been physically born into it." Mother smiled at Leng Leng. "I wonder if Deborah realises that you are also adopted."
When Leng Leng heard those words her jaws dropped. She stared hard at her mother and dropped her cookie. "I didn’t know I was adopted!" she exclaimed.
Still smiling, Mother said, "Well, you are. When you accepted Jesus as Savior last year, you were immediately adopted into God’s family. You’re a child of God now, just like Anna is a child of the Lees." Mother reached over and picked up her Bible from the counter. She opened it and handed it to Leng Leng. "Read Romans 8:16-17," she said.
Leng Leng read aloud. "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ."
Mother nodded. "You became a child of God and an heir to His heavenly riches," she said. "God has accepted you as His own as Anna’s new parents have accepted her as their very own."
Leng Leng nodded. "I think Anna and I should get along well together," she said thoughtfully. "She’ll be glad to learn that I’ve been adopted, too." After a moment she looked at her mother and grinned. "You know what, Mom? If Anna becomes a Christian, she’ll have been adopted twice. Isn’t that cool? I’m going to tell her."
Thought: Have you been adopted into God’s family? If not, wouldn’t you like to be?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for adopting me to be Your child. It is wonderful to know that the moment I trusted Jesus to be my Lord and Saviour, I became a member of the royal family and will receive a spiritual inheritance. Help me to treasure this truth and keep trusting Jesus. I pray in His precious name. Amen.
