GIVING AND RECEIVING

JANUARY 17

PROVERBS 11:24-26

GIVING AND RECEIVING

Jason is a very generous boy. Whenever he heard that any of his friends is short of something, he would try to buy it for him. It could be a pencil, an eraser or a notebook. Of course, he could only buy what he could afford with his own pocket money.

Jason’s parents are not rich but they have taught him that God loves a cheerful giver. He never once forgets to put his offering into the offering bag during church service. Once, when his friend was sick in hospital, he spent his whole week’s allowance on a well-illustrated Bible storybook for him to read. That week, he did not spend any money on his favourite chocolate drink.

Mom and Dad are also helpful and equally generous people. Jason respects his parents very much. He makes it a point to tell his parents how he spends his money. That way he learns how to spend his money wisely because his parents can correct his mistakes. Jason also discovers that whenever he spends his pocket money on gifts for friends, his parents would increase his allowance. He always has enough to spend.

God has made some rich and some poor so that the rich can show their love by giving to the poor. Jesus has said that whoever gives to a poor needy person is giving to the Lord. So giving to others is giving to God. God never fails to meet our needs if we give generously.

Thought: It is good to adopt this motto:" Freely receive; freely give"
Prayer: Father in Heaven, help me to give generously and cheerfully to others as You have given to me. Help me not to hoard what I can give to help a friend in need. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
