LOVE IN ACTION…

JULY 22, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Two days ago, we learnt how God’s love brings His people together. His love in us must also be shared with others who are not Christians. By this, non-Christians will come to know the love of God and that we are God’s followers. Charity is not passive, it is love in action. Charity cannot be kept to yourself but must be expressed in deeds and speech.

Mr Tham had new neighbours who moved in a few months ago. He said to himself, “I wonder why the new neighbours are so friendly and helpful. Nobody helps others for nothing.” Mr Tham was rich, and people were always asking him for money or favours. But not his new neighbours, the Lims. They never asked for anything but were always giving him something or were trying to help him.

What did the Lims do? One time, Mr and Mrs Tham got back from a trip late at night. Mrs Lim knew they probably did not have anything to eat and despite the late hour, brought them some curry puffs and desserts. The Thams enjoyed their treats, and were very grateful.

On another occasion, Mr and Mrs Tham’s 10-year-old grandson, Luke, came to visit but the couple had to go out for a little while. He was left alone with the maid and soon became bored. He went out of the house and met Mr Lim. Mr Lim invited him to play with his children. After telling his maid, the young lad went into Mr Lim’s house. And since Mr and Mrs Tham were late, and didn’t leave instructions to cook dinner, the maid didn’t. So Luke had dinner with the Lims, an enjoyable time.

When Mr Tham came to pick up his grandson, he felt very grateful again. Mr Tham finally found out why Mr and Mrs Lim were so nice - they believed in Jesus and had God’s love in their hearts and so they were always wanting to help others.

Loving and helping others is what a Christian must do. A Christian who loves God, loves and helps others. This is charity, love in action. Jesus gives us this law in the Bible – thou shalt love thy __________ as thyself (Matthew 19:19)

Thought: Having the love of God in our hearts, what should we do?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, forgive me that sometimes I do not love and help others. Help me to share with others the love that I have received through Your Son. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
