GUIDANCE FROM THE WORD OF GOD

NOVEMBER 23, Psalm 119:105

How many of you have experienced a blackout in your home at night? Was it very dark? Were you afraid? What was the first thing you did? Look for a torch or for candles? Why? So that you can have light to see what is in front of you, and you will not bump into things, trip over things and hurt yourself. So light is something important to us especially when we are in a dark place.

The Bible tells us that the Word of God is like a lamp and light to us. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” What does this verse mean?

First, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, …”. During biblical times, the people of Israel did not have electricity like us. When night came, it would be total darkness. Few people travelled at night. In the home, they had oil lamps. These were vessels made out of clay, filled with olive oil, with a wick which was lit. They used these lamps to light their homes and to move around at home. They also carried these lamps with them if they had to leave their home in the night. The lamp guided them as they walked in the home or outside so that they would not stumble knock into objects or trip over something. Second, “…and a light unto my path.” This has a similar meaning. Light was also needed so that they could walk along a path safely, and not stumble or trip over something.

God’s Word, the Bible is like a lamp and a light to us. The Bible is able to guide us so that we can live lives without falling into sin and disobeying God. But for the Bible to be a light to us, we need to study the Bible. We need to hear the Word of God and obey. So, this means that when you read the Bible at home or when your teachers teach you the Word of God, you must pay attention, take note and obey what it says.

Thought: Is the Word of God a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for providing us with the Bible, a guide to our everyday living. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
