NO EVIL THINGS …

AUGUST 15, Psalm 101:3

Ling was thoughtful as she listened to Mr. Tan, her Sunday school teacher. “Television and use of the internet have become a major part of most of our lives,” said Mr. Tan. “Let’s admit it–wicked plots and bad language are often used, and they’re things Christians shouldn’t willingly see or hear. We should be careful to watch and listen only to things God wants us to watch and listen.”

“That’s like the song my little sister’s always singing,” Jackson said with a grin, “Oh, be careful little eyes what you see!”

“Yeah,” said Eva. “And the next verse says, Be careful little ears what you hear.”

Mr. Tan nodded. “We all probably think of that as a little kids’ song, but it’s still a good one to remember,” he said. “Let’s end today’s class by singing it. It has several good verses, but we’ll sing just the first one this morning. Think about the words again as you go through the week.”

Together the class sang, “Oh, be careful little eyes what you see… for the Father up above is looking down in love, so be careful little eyes what you see!” Then Mr. Tan prayed that throughout the week they would all remember that God is always with them. He prayed that they would only watch things that are pleasing to God.

The following Saturday, Ling’s parents were busy working outdoors when she turned on the television. For a few minutes, she watched the first show that came on. In it, a lady was trying to steal someone else’s husband. But I sure would not want God to watch it with me, thought Ling, and she changed the channel.

Ling tried a comedy show next, but several of the characters used God’s name in a wrong way, so she switched to a different programme. As she tried one channel after another, the words of the “little kids’ song” kept playing in her mind--”Be careful little eyes what you see.” Finally, Ling jumped up and turned off the television set. “Finding a show to watch is too much trouble,” she thought, “Mom said there was a good one coming on in an hour. I’ll go out and see if she or Dad wants any help until then.”

Thought: Do you watch only things you’d like Jesus to watch with you?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to remember that You are actually with me all the time, even though I cannot see You. When I watch television or go on the internet, help me to choose shows and sites that do not dishonour Jesus. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
