JANUARY 23, 1 Peter 3:7
We continue from yesterday’s reading. God’s instruction to the Christian husbands is that they must not neglect their wives, but to love and honour them. Although that sounds logical, it was not so in the days of Peter where women were considered as inferior to men. They could not work outside of the family, they had to rely on their fathers before they were married and relied totally on their husbands when they married. Women were bullied and victimised, and so when Peter wrote these words, they were a shock to many men as it was not normal then to treat women well!
Peter reminded these men that as wives are the weaker vessel, they require their husbands’ love, care, honour and support. Christian men need to remember that Christian women have equal spiritual rights. She is a fellow-heir of the grace of God. In Christianity, God gives women equal spiritual rights though in terms of function in the family, the husband is the head of the household.
Thought: A godly man loves and honours his wife.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, again I pray for my parents that they will keep close to You, and in turn, keep close to each other. And if they do that, they will be good parents to me! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
