NOVEMBER 18, 1 Peter 2:2
Jon watched his baby sister greedily drink her bottle of milk while he ate chocolate pudding. “Can I give Sarah some pudding?” he asked.
Mom smiled. “No, I’m afraid not,” she said. “Sarah is just a baby and the chocolate might give her a tummy ache.”
“But all she ever has is milk!” exclaimed Jon. “I bet she’s tired of that.” “Milk is the only thing that babies drink at first,” Mom told him. “That’s all you had at first, too.”
“I eat all kinds of things now,” said Jon. “Yes, you do,” agreed Mom. “A little at a time, we added cereal, vegetables, fruit, and finally meat; and of course, chocolate pudding!”
Mom smiled at Jon. “We fed you very carefully,” she added, “and look at what a strong boy you’ve become.”
Jon grinned and sat up a little taller as Mom added, “Did you know, Jon, that your dad and I are also ‘feeding’ you God’s Word – the Bible – in much the same way?”
“You are?” asked Jon. He looked surprised.
Mom nodded. “We’re giving you more and more of God’s Word, adding a few more verses and a little more teaching as you grow older,” she said. “When you were very small, we began reading to you from a very simple Bible storybook. After that, we read from the one that Grandma bought for you. It had bigger words and gave more details than the one we had been using.”
“You read stories to me right out of the Bible, too,” said Jon, “and now I can read some of them from my own Bible. I like to read them by myself.”
Mom smiled. “I’m glad to hear that,” she said. “You’re feeding yourself spiritually, and I hope you’ll always do that. Your dad and I want you to love God’s Word.” Jon grinned. “As much as I love chocolate pudding?” he asked.
Mom smiled. “No,” she said. “Even more!”
Thought: Have you learned to feed yourself spiritually? It is great to be fed from God’s Word as you listen to your Sunday school lesson or do your own Quiet Time.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that it is important to learn to feed myself spiritually. Help me to not just speed through what I read, but to meditate and see how the lessons learnt can apply to me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
