INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF ISAIAH

SEPTEMBER 1, Isaiah 1:1

This book is named after its writer, the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah is known as the Gospel Prophet, as this book contains many wonderful prophecies concerning our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, from His virgin conception, royal birth, to His sufferings, death and resurrection.

The book of Isaiah is also like a little Bible. The Bible comprises 66 books; the book of Isaiah comprises 66 chapters. The Bible comprises 39 books of the Old Testament and 27 books of the New Testament. Like many books of the Old Testament that tell of God’s coming judgments for the sins of the people, the first 39 chapters of the book of Isaiah also tell of God’s coming judgments, not only on Israel but also on the other wicked and ungodly, pagan nations that are Israel’s neighbours. The last 27 chapters of the book tell of God’s divine plan to restore His people, just as the New Testament contains the good news of God saving His people from their sins through His Son, Jesus Christ.

The book of Isaiah paints a wonderful picture of both God’s justice and His mercy. Just as He judges Israel for their sins, He will also judge our sins. However, God will lovingly restore Israel, just as He will lovingly restore us if we believe and trust in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Thought: What a wonderful book the Bible is!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for both the Old and New Testaments. It is amazing that Your Holy Word is kept intact for me thousands of years after they have been written. May I treasure and read Thy Word daily, knowing it is such a wonderful treasure! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
