SEPTEMBER 7, Isaiah 5:26-30
The Assyrians were a wicked and sinful people. Coming from the north of Israel, their motive for invading Israel was to plunder. However, God used them for His higher purpose of chastening His sinful people. God is seen in this passage as the One who gathers the forces. He is seen as One raising an ensign or banner to rally the invading armies. He is likened to one hissing or whistling, as beekeepers are known to do, when calling a swarm of bees. At His signal, the attacking forces will burst into action.
This passage describes the ferocious power of the Assyrians. They were like war machines that fought relentlessly. Their arrows were sharp and their bows bent and ever ready to shoot. Their battle cry struck terror like the roar of lions. There will be no escape from the mighty Assyrians. When the Assyrians come, the noise they make will be like a roaring sea and the hearts of the people will be heavy with hopelessness and sorrow.
Pray we do not fall into habitual sin and incur God’s wrath. Indeed, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrew 10:31).
Untold sufferings will take place when there is a war.

Thought: Thank You Lord for peace in our time.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, may we use the time of peace to be good Christian children and to serve You faithfully. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
