THE GOSPEL FIRST GIVEN

DECEMBER 13, Genesis 3:15

The first gospel given is also the first promise recorded in the Scriptures. It brought hope when our first parents were in despair after they sinned. It was contained in this sentence: ”I will put enmity between thee (Satan) and the woman, and between thy seed (mankind, evil by nature) and her seed ( Jesus).”

This promise is also a revelation of God’s mercy to the world. It speaks of a coming Saviour who would be born of a virgin. Note that God did not say “their seed” – meaning the seed of both Adam and Eve. Instead, He said “her seed”, meaning that the seed is only of the woman. This promised seed of the woman would bruise the serpent’s head.

God, in His love and wisdom, sent the Saviour to conquer Satan and thus save mankind. Satan thought he was victorious when he beguiled our first parents. But this ‘triumph’ was short-lived, for Christ would “bruise his head”. Being the seed of the woman, our Lord Jesus Christ is mighty to save and has everlasting victory.

Thought: God is always victorious.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, teach me to trust in You, even if the future looks uncertain. Although I do not know what tomorrow will bring, I know You control tomorrow and the future, and so, in You I trust. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
