AUGUST 20, 1 John 4:6-7
There was once a boy who was excited after managing to memorise some Bible verses from the Book of 1 John. He was to recite them before his Sunday School class that coming Sunday. When his grandpa got home, he told him about his ‘achievement’.
Grandpa asked, “Which chapter are the verses from?”
“1 John 4,” replied the boy with beaming eyes and ran off to play after hearing grandpa saying something about writing it on the heart.
He went to play in his tree house in the backyard. When his little brother also climbed into the tree house, he disallowed him from entering in. There was a scuffle between the brothers; the younger brother hit him on his chest. If not for grandpa who boomed in his loud voice and ordered them to stop, they would have gotten into a serious fight.
The older boy was called into the house by his grandfather. He was asked to recite the Bible verses he had memorised. He started rattling off the verses but was asked to slow down and think about the verses he said. When he came to verses 7 and 8, he realized why grandpa had asked him to slow down and think about the verses. He looked down, feeling ashamed of himself. The verses had pricked his conscience.

This boy had head knowledge only. There is difference between head knowledge and heart knowledge. Head knowledge is not enough. It will not keep us from sinning. Applying God’s words to our heart is very important. 1 John 4:7,8 says that we must love one another because God is love. Will this be in your heart?
Thought: Memorising Bible verses is good, but what is more important than this?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for today’s lesson. Help me to be a hearer and doer of Your Word. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
