JULY 21, 1 Kings 18:30-40 

Elijah called out to the people of Israel to gather near so that they could witness him offering the sacrifice to the God of Israel.

First, he repaired the old altar of the Lord that was broken down. He rebuilt it with twelve stones, which represent the twelve tribes from the sons of Jacob. He also built a trench round the altar. He prepared a bullock and to show God is fully in control of the elements, ordered four barrels of water to be poured over the sacrifice three times! Wow - in total, twelve barrels were poured and water filled the trench. Next, Elijah waited till it was time for the offering of the evening sacrifice before he approached the altar.

Elijah addressed the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He prayed that God will show that He is the Lord God of Israel. And, it was according to His word that Elijah had gathered the people and offered the evening sacrifice. Do you notice that all of his prayer was for God’s glory? When God answered with fire that consumed the sacrifice and dried up the trench, the people fell on their faces and acknowledged the Lord God. For He alone can answer prayers.
