SEPTEMBER 23, Genesis 1:27
“Our science teacher, Mr Lee, says all life began in the water that used to cover the earth,” Joe informed his parents one evening. “He says that when dry land began to appear, some of the creatures grew legs and lungs so they could live on land. They kept changing, and over millions of years, they slowly developed into intelligent human beings, and that was the start of the human race.”
“Mr. Lee called it evolution,” added Grace, his twin sister. “And do you believe that?” Dad asked. Joe shook his head. “Not me! It sounds dumb!” he declared. “I asked Mr. Lee about the Bible’s account of creation, and he says it’s a myth. He says we have to learn what the science book teaches and...”
“Joe asked Mr. Lee if he really believed all that stuff about evolution,” interrupted Grace with a big grin, “and Mr. Lee said he does. Just as the bell was ringing, Joe said, ‘Well, I guess it’s all right for you to believe in evolution as long as it’s all right for me to believe in creation.’ The whole class just roared!”
Joe grinned, too. “Yeah,” he added. “Mr. Lee was so mad!” Joe and Grace burst into laughter, but their parents didn’t laugh. “It’s never right to show disrespect for a teacher,” said Dad, “even if you know he’s wrong.”
“But what can we do?” asked Grace. “We can’t learn stuff that we don’t believe in!” “No, and we’ll fail our tests if we don’t answer questions the way he wants us to,” added Joe.
“Learn the material,” said Dad, “and when you write test answers you don’t agree with, you can let Mr. Lee know you’ve answered the questions according to the science book but personally, you still believe the Bible.”
“We can do that,” said Joe. He turned to Grace. “Let’s try to get the best grades in class,” he suggested, “but we’ll tell Mr. Lee we still believe the human race began when God created Adam. Okay?” Grace nodded.
“All right!” said Dad. “Mom and I will pray for you and for Mr. Lee.”
Thought: Do my teachers say that humans evolved from animals? Believe God, rather than teachers who teach evolution.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want to always show respect to teachers so that I can be a good testimony to them. However, at the same time, I want to be faithful to You. Please give me the courage to let my teachers and classmates know that I believe what the Bible says; You are the one who created all things, including the human race. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
