IS CHRIST A HISTORICAL FIGURE?
There are those who doubt if Christ ever existed. They believe that Christ was no more than a myth like the characters in Greek mythology, like Zeus, Hercules and so on. However, the evidences make it hard to sensibly refute that Christ did exist at the very least as a historical figure. There are abundant historical evidences to show that Christ was truly a man who lived during the early 1st century AD. Many of these come from the writings of non-Christian historians who lived in the first few hundreds of years after the ascension of Christ. Some of these historians were actually negative towards Christianity and were not shy to admit it. Nonetheless, their writings showed various details about Christ, and many of the facts were similar to those recorded in the gospels. Another irrefutable evidence is found in the way our calendar functions. Our year 2012 is based on the birth of Christ also known as “Anno Domini”, AD and the calendar prior to AD is known as BC; “Before Christ”. Hence, the creators of the calendar system that we use declares that Christ was once born into this world and definitely did exist in history.
What we must realize though, is that the significance of Christ is far more than just that of a historical figure. Christ was not like any other man who came into this world and that after his death, passed on as a mere historical fact. Christ was God, who came into this world and became a turning point of human history. He presented Himself blameless as a sacrifice to redeem Mankind from the condemnation of sin. He became fully man so that he could bear the sins of sinful man. While man come and go and are lost forever if they are not saved, Christ is eternal before and after His existence on Earth. Christ was, before history even existed. He is the sovereign and supreme God of history itself, controlling every facet of it. While there is no doubt among sensible historians that Christ did exist, what we must als know is that Christ has said that He will return to the world again in the future. This is known as His second coming. In His first coming, He came to sacrifice and to save. However, in His second coming, He will return as a judge. Now is the time that He has given all mankind the opportunity to come to accept His gift of salvation, however, if they reject it, He will return only to judge. Dear reader, if you have not accepedt Christ as your Savior, you must not wait, you must repent now, because the return of Christ is soon and you will not be able to do so then.
Thought: Do I trust that Christ was more than just a historical figure?
Prayer: Save me Lord, before Christ returns.
